FAQ Summary:

What issues does this kit fix in fuel tanks?

It removes gum, gook, and shellac-like residue from deteriorated fuel, eliminates rust caused by condensation, and permanently seals leaks and seams in metal, fiberglass, or plastic tanks.

What is the complete cleaning, etching, and sealing procedure?

Remove tank from vehicle. Clean thoroughly with Tank Cleaner (Step 1) and air-dry completely. Etch with Gas Tank Etch (Step 2) to remove rust and leave a zinc-phosphate base (skip if no rust). Ensure the tank is bone-dry with warm moving air (hair dryer works well), then apply Gas Tank Sealer (Step 3) per label instructions.

Do I have to use every step?

Always use the Tank Cleaner. If your tank has no rust, you can skip the Etch and go straight to sealing (keep the etch for other rust-removal jobs).

Is the kit safe for fiberglass or plastic tanks?

• Fiberglass: Use cleaner + sealer only (skip etch). Seal all open edges to prevent fuel wicking. • Plastic: Use cleaner only — do NOT use etch or sealer (MEK in sealer may damage plastic). • Not for fiberglass tanks that mix oil and fuel (2-cycle engines) or any aircraft tanks.

Why is Bill Hirsch Gas Tank Sealer the best on the market?

Superior hole/seam sealing, high strength with needed flexibility, non-porous, alcohol/ethanol/additive resistant, works on all metals and most fiberglass, contains rust inhibitor, and has been the #1 selling sealer worldwide since 1965 (over 3 million cans sold).

Is the sealer hazardous?

Yes — like all chemical sealers, use with extreme caution and proper ventilation.

Can leftover sealer be saved and reused?

Yes! Unlike many competitors, Bill Hirsch sealer can be stored and reused later. If it thickens, thin with MEK.

Can the sealer be removed later if needed?

Yes (professional radiator or chemical stripping shops can do it easily).

What are the most important cautions?

Tank must be 100 % bone-dry before sealing or the sealer may loosen and clog fuel lines. Do not use additives containing MEK after sealing. For diesel tanks, thoroughly clean/boil first. Always follow label directions.

How long has this product been trusted?

Over 40 years. It is the largest-selling tank sealer in the world and the only type used in aircraft.
