BILL HIRSCH GAS TANK SEALER: TECHNICAL DATA & APPLICATION GUIDE
Alcohol/Ethanol Resistant Red Label Formula
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Bill Hirsch Gas Tank Sealer is a high-strength, flexible, non-porous PVC based coating designed to repair fuel tanks suffering from rust, sludge, or leaks. It is specifically engineered to resist modern fuels containing alcohol and ethanol.
Proven Reliability:
Over 3 million cans have been sold globally over the past 40 years. It is the only type of sealer used in aircraft applications.Superior Adhesion: Unlike moisture-cured urethane paints sold as sealers, this formula includes rust inhibitors and will not break away to form a "floating plastic bag" inside the tank.Material Compatibility: Works effectively on steel, aluminum, galvanized, and fiberglass tanks.
PREPARATION PROCEDURES
Tank Removal: To properly seal a tank, it must be removed from the vehicle.Cleaning Sludge/Goo: Use an industrial cleaner/degreaser. Mix 1 quart of cleaner with 1 quart of warm water and agitate frequently for 12–24 hours.Rust Removal: If surface rust remains after cleaning, apply a gas tank etch to remove the rust and provide a better surface for the sealer to bond to.Professional Cleaning: Tanks with heavy, years-long rust buildup should be professionally cleaned at a radiator repair or "ready-strip" shop.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Absolute Dryness: The entire interior of the tank must be 100% dry before introducing the sealer. Any dampness or foreign matter will prevent adhesion and may lead to fuel system clogs.Temperature: For best results, apply when the temperature is 60 Deg F or higher.Application: Once the tank is clean and dry, introduce the sealer and ensure all interior surfaces are coated.
CRITICAL MAINTENANCE & SAFETY
Re-usability: Unlike many competitors, Bill Hirsch Sealer is re-usable if not all used in one application.Thinning: If the sealer thickens over time, it can be re-thinned using Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK).Additive Warning: After installation, avoid fuel additives containing MEK (such as certain "Gumout" products), as they can soften the sealer and clog fuel lines.Exclusions: Not recommended for plastic tanks or fiberglass tanks feeding 2 cycle engines where oil and fuel are mixed in the same tank.
